Today started Vernon High School's 10 School Days of Christmas countdown. Today's theme was "Here Comes Santa..." and students definitely got into the spirit of the day.

Friday evening Vernon ISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward and Vernon High School Principal Dr. Cynthia Jackson manned the Salvation Army Red Kettle at Walmart. The Red Kettle Campaign is the Salvation Army's major fundraiser of the year. All the money collected stays right here in the community with the local Salvation Army chapter.

Several students and families received some great tips on how to complete their FAFSA application last night at the Panhandle-Plains Higher Education Foundation FAFSA workshop. A thank you to them for helping our students, and also a big thank you to Jeanne Ballard and Ashley Whitley from Vernon College for coming to assist our students.

Students in Mrs. Stanley's chemistry classes are studying metal ions and completed a lab project yesterday. When different compounds are heated, the metal ions give off different colored flames. In their project, students heated compounds and were able to determine what metals were in each compound based on the color of the flame. They heated 9 different compounds, which showed all the colors of the rainbow.

Yesterday VHS seniors had the opportunity to tour the Vernon College Campus. As always, Vernon College gave an outstanding presentation and offered great feedback to our seniors. The college also provided a lunch for our students.

Here is the VISD Cafeteria Menu for December. Remember ALL Vernon ISD students are eligible to receive a free breakfast and free lunch everyday.

This morning due to an incident involving law enforcement officials that was in close proximity to Vernon High School, and following the recommendation of the Wilbarger County Sheriff’s Office, VHS issued a secure protocol alert.
The campus began following secure protocol measures at 8:39 a.m., and the alert was lifted at 8:53 a.m. At no time during those 14 minutes was there a danger threat on the campus.

On the fall National Signing Day two weeks ago, VHS senior Jackson Aydelott signed a letter of intent to run track on a scholarship from the University of Wyoming. Jackson is the defending Class 3A State Champion in the 400-Meter Dash. Congratulations!!! For the complete story, please follow this link: https://www.vernonisd.org/article/1900951
