Last week VISD held a Lions Roar Recognition Ceremony where special award were presented for the 2023-24 school year. Awards were presented to the Teachers and Staff of the Year at each campus, retirees were honored, a local business was recognized as the Lion's Pride Partner of the Year, and the Newcomer Teacher of the Year, Elementary Teacher of the Year and Secondary Teacher of the Year were announced.

Longevity awards were presented to employees who had been with the district for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years, along with recognizing PTO members, VISD trustees and the VISD Retired Teacher Award.

All campuses will be on an early release schedule on Thursday and on Friday, the final day of our 2023-24 school year!!

Some of our VISD students have been recommended for summer school. If your child has been recommended for summer school, you should have received a letter with a QR code. The QR code allows you to register your child for summer school. Please complete the registration process. If you need assistance with registering your child, in person registration will be at VMS in the Library on May 29th and 30th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
If your child has medication at their school, please stop by and pick it up by the last day of school. The medication cannot be sent home with the student and it cannot stay at the school during the summer. If you have any questions, please contact your campus school nurse.
Tomorrow it will be Donuts with Dad at McCord. The fun event will start at 7 a.m., in the cafeteria. Dads, please use the cafeteria entrance, the south door, to enter the building.
Last week was Science Week for our 1st grade students and several science events were held throughout the week. One day high school students from Mrs. Allison Stanley's physics class and they did several experiments with the students. Those experiments included: spontaneous combustion with glycerin and potassium permanganate then elephant toothpaste! The high school students then grouped up with the first graders and competed to build the tallest tower out of marshmallows and toothpicks. The tallest tower was about 26 cm tall!

Over 200 members of our Vernon ISD family participated in the Santa Rosa Parade held Wednesday afternoon. Our McCord, Elementary School and Middle School all had floats in the parade, while our VHS seniors rode on fire department trucks. Other members of the VISD family rode on floats of various businesses and organizations.
Last week was Science Week for our 1st grade students and science events were held throughout the week. One of those experiments involved using Mentos candy to make a bottled soft drink into a rocket.

One of those involved using a watermelon, putting rubber bands around it and counting how many rubber bands it would take to make it explode. This year it took 285 before the watermelon blew its top.
Last week students in our 1st grade Gifted & Talented Program held a GT Showcase to present their spring semester projects. Each student selected a wild animal to research. The students made a poster board with information and photos of their animal, as well as put together a booklet with information about animals in general and their specific favorite animal.
Over the course of the last month, Vernon ISD Administration has visited each of our campuses to hand out popcorn to teachers and staff as a way to say THANK YOU for the great job they've done this school year. Today, we wrapped up the popcorn tour with a stop at McCord Elementary.
Don't forget, but before you head to your spot to watch the Santa Rosa Rodeo Parade, stop by in front of the VISD Administration Building and grab a bag of popcorn to munch on while you watch the beautiful floats and horses go by!
Take a moment during the noon hour to stop by the VISD Administration Building and welcome the new leader of the Roarin' Lion Band, Jeremiah Hastings, to town. You can have some punch and a cookie during the come-and-go event.
Downtown will be hopping Wednesday afternoon for the annual Santa Rosa Rodeo Parade and we're going to be poppin' as well! Swing by and pick up a bag of popcorn to munch on during the parade! We'll be on the sidewalk in front of the VISD Administration Building.
