Today's Red Ribbon Week theme at McCord was "Team Up Against Drugs" and students were encouraged to wear a t-shirt or jersey of their favorite team and/or player. There were plenty of Lions roaming the halls, along with some Cowboys, Rangers and a few Michael Jordans!

This week McCord is celebrating Red Ribbon Week and today's theme was "Put A Cap On Drugs," with students and teachers alike wearing their favorite cap/hat to school. There was even a sighting of a mini Deion Sanders!!

The Lions Roar Tailgate held Friday leading up to the Lions' game against Bowie was a fantastic success! From busy food trucks to kids enjoying all the games, it was an evening full of fun and community spirit. A huge thanks goes out to everyone who set up, participated, and came out to make this event amazing! When our school and community comes together, great things happen. Here's to positive collaboration for a thriving town and school system!!

DPS State Trooper Gutierrez (aka Trooper G) stopped by McCord Wednesday to talk to students about basic safety -- the importance of knowing their own address and phone number, and how/when to dial 911 for emergencies. Trooper G also discussed Halloween safety tips with the students. Those trick or treat safety tips included: staying with an adult; using a flashlight or glow stick in the dark; and to have an adult check their candy before they start to eat it.

On Wednesday, students in Mrs. Newcomer's class conducted a science experiment to see if the shape and size of a magnet made a difference in how many paper clips it could pick up.

During this November election, Vernon ISD is conducting a special election to fill the unexpired term for Place 3 on the VISD Board of Trustees. Here are the 5 candidates for the seat in the order they appear on the ballot.

On Tuesday McCord Elementary had some special visitors, as three VFD firemen stopped by with a fire truck and ambulance for our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students to see. The firemen explained different tools on the truck and talked to the students about what number to call if there is a fire and what they should do if they are ever on fire. Students also received a surprise visit from Sparky! Our first grade students toured the fire station last week.

VISD is participating in the Texas Education Agency's special education Differentiated Monitoring & Support process, and that includes a survey for anyone associated with the district -- parent, teacher, staff, and administrator. All information you share is confidential and will only be reviewed internally to assist TEA with the monitoring process. Thanksgiving is 6 weeks away, but it's not to early to start training for the VHS Turkey Trot!! The 5K Turkey Trot will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, at Lion Stadium. There will be a Kids' Fun Run that starts at 9 a.m., with the 5K Turkey Trot set to start at 9:15 a.m. The deadline to register and secure a t-shirt is Nov. 13. The event is sponsored by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance in Vernon. The event is hosted by the Vernon High School National Honor Society and Student Council. All proceeds from the event benefit VISD at-risk youth.

Our Vernon ISD Fall Break is officially underway. We hope everyone has a great loooong weekend and we can't wait to see everyone back in their classrooms on Tuesday!!

Our McCord students showed their Lion spirit Friday, dressing up in construction gear for the "Wreck The Yellowjackets" football pep rally theme.

Our McCord pre-kindergarten students had a blast Thursday at the Pumpkin Patch in Davidson, Okla. They enjoyed going through the maze, a hay ride, and petting the animals among other fun activities.

Next week Vernon ISD has a short school week. We will have classes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and then dismiss school for our Fall Break. Our Fall Break is from Oct. 17 thru Oct. 21. We hope everyone has a great, relaxing time during the time away from school, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on our campuses and in offices on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
