Last week students in our 1st grade Gifted & Talented Program held a GT Showcase to present their spring semester projects. Each student selected a wild animal to research. The students made a poster board with information and photos of their animal, as well as put together a booklet with information about animals in general and their specific favorite animal.

Over the course of the last month, Vernon ISD Administration has visited each of our campuses to hand out popcorn to teachers and staff as a way to say THANK YOU for the great job they've done this school year. Today, we wrapped up the popcorn tour with a stop at McCord Elementary.

Don't forget, but before you head to your spot to watch the Santa Rosa Rodeo Parade, stop by in front of the VISD Administration Building and grab a bag of popcorn to munch on while you watch the beautiful floats and horses go by!

Take a moment during the noon hour to stop by the VISD Administration Building and welcome the new leader of the Roarin' Lion Band, Jeremiah Hastings, to town. You can have some punch and a cookie during the come-and-go event.

Downtown will be hopping Wednesday afternoon for the annual Santa Rosa Rodeo Parade and we're going to be poppin' as well! Swing by and pick up a bag of popcorn to munch on during the parade! We'll be on the sidewalk in front of the VISD Administration Building.

Thank you to all who helped our life skills students participate in our Vernon Olympics and the All-Star Olympics in Altus.

This is Science Week for our 1st grade students and today 3 Rivers Foundation set up four science stations for our students to visit. One station was All About Magnets, while another was Rock Friends. 3 Rivers brought a portable planetarium so our students could go on A Visit To Outer Space, and Gateway Water brought a learning trailer so students could learn about the water cycle and how we can be good stewards of our water.

School will be out in a couple of weeks and with that comes trying to keep the kiddos active and entertained. We have three great summer enrichment camps that will do both of those things and also keep them learning -- and learning in a fun way!! Check out the flyers for more information.

Kenneth Reynolds was named the Custodian of the Year, while Kenneth Newton received the Maintenance Worker of the Year award. The Bus Driver of the Year award went to Steve Azbell. We greatly appreciate all of our custodians, maintenance workers and bus drivers. Your behind-the-scenes work is invaluable to Vernon ISD. It would be hard for the district to function without all of you!! Thank you for another great year!!

McCord art teacher Ms. Rose Rivera had students design pinatas and she then chose 2 designs for the class to create. Students from Ms. Crystal Schmoker's pre-kindergarten class take their turn on trying to bust them.

Today is School Nurse's Day and we have 3 of the best there is. Amanda Thomas, Jennifer Walker and Rhonda Garrett -- for all of the runny noses you've wiped; the scraped knees you've bandaged; the upset stomachs you've helped settle and everything in between -- we THANK YOU!! VISD is lucky to have the 3 of you providing health care, and at times health education, at our campuses!

Don't forget, Thursday is McCord's Muffins With Mom day!!

There was a great turnout last night for the McCord Roundup!! Parents of both current students and future students were able to pick up information from a variety of organizations and also the tour school, while the youngsters got to play games, and eat hot dogs.

This morning our McCord 1st graders took a field trip to the Vernon Elementary School to get a tour of the school they will be attending next year. Members of the VES Student Council served as tour guides.
